Why NearChat

Encrypted by default. Offline by design.

Six things that make NearChat different from every other chat app on your phone.

Zero servers

Your chat path never leaves your Wi-Fi router. There is no NearChat backend to log, leak, subpoena, or shut down.

End-to-end encrypted

X25519 key agreement + ChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated encryption. Same primitives WhatsApp and Signal use.

LAN speed

No internet hops, no relay servers. Messages, photos, voice — all cross the room in milliseconds.

Voice, photos, stickers

Voice notes with waveforms, camera + gallery sharing, 6 sticker packs, 47 animated stickers — all encrypted.

7 languages

English, Arabic (RTL), French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese — translated natively, not auto.

App lock

Optional password + Face ID / Touch ID. Auto-lock when backgrounded. Password hash never leaves the device.

How it works

Pair once. Chat forever.

No accounts, no SMS codes. The whole onboarding is two phones and one QR code.

1

Open the app

Both you and your friend open NearChat on your phones. No signup, no email.

2

Scan the QR

One phone shows a QR code, the other scans it. The handshake takes a fraction of a second.

3

Chat

As long as you're on the same Wi-Fi, your devices find each other automatically. Done.

Built for real chats

Everything you'd expect — quietly encrypted.

01

Voice messages with live waveforms

Hold to record, slide to cancel, real-time amplitude visualization.

02

In-app gallery + camera

Limited-access aware picker, hero swipe-to-dismiss image viewer, auto-encryption.

03

Themes & gradients

Light/dark/system, HSL color wheel, two-color gradient picker — set the vibe per chat.

04

Stickers — 6 packs, 47 animated

Swipeable pager, smooth animated stickers, all bundled (no internet needed).

05

Search, replies, deletes

Full chat search across messages and links, threaded replies, message-level deletes.

FAQ

Questions worth a straight answer.

Does NearChat need internet?
No. The chat path runs entirely on your local Wi-Fi. The only thing that touches the internet is the optional update check (App Store / Play Store) and any external link a peer sends you that you choose to open.
Where are messages stored?
Only on your device, in an AES-GCM-encrypted SQLite database. The encryption key lives in iOS Keychain / Android Keystore. There is no cloud copy.
What if my friend isn't on the same Wi-Fi?
Then NearChat won't deliver. By design. We don't have a relay server. Most people use it with family at home, friends at the office, or roommates — anyone you share a router with.
What happens if my friend's phone gets a new IP?
NearChat re-discovers them automatically by scanning your local /24 subnet on the chat port. You don't have to re-pair when the router shuffles DHCP leases.
Do you collect anything?
No. There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no telemetry. The privacy page explains every byte of network traffic the app generates.
Can I unlock the app with Face ID?
Yes, optionally. Set a password first, then turn on biometrics. The password hash never leaves the device, and biometric data never enters the app — iOS / Android handle it.
Does NearChat work on the Moon? 🌙
Technically, yes. NearChat doesn't care about the internet, cell towers, or GPS — it only needs two devices on the same Wi-Fi. Open a Personal Hotspot on the Moon and another phone can join it, because Wi-Fi is just radio waves and radio waves travel through vacuum perfectly fine (that's how Apollo astronauts spoke to Houston). So as far as we know, NearChat is the first chat app that works on the Moon.

Stop chatting through someone else's server.

NearChat is free, has no ads, no accounts, and no cloud. Just two phones and your Wi-Fi.
